Buying high quality compost begins with knowing what you have.  The STA Certified Compost Program is founded on highly researched compost testing methods, and careful lab oversight to give you confidence the test results are accurate for the product you purchase through the STA Certified Compost Program.

Defining Compost

To get what we want, it is important that we use the same word to refer to the product.  The definition of “What is compost?” has been standardized in collaboration with the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials ( AAPFCO).

Lab Oversight

STA labs are held to high standards for implementing the compost test methods through the STA’s Compost Analysis Program (CAP).  CAP tests the STA labs’ quality against the other labs in the program.
